A Study in Color (Timbre)
Click on the icon to your left. This will download a file to your computer. It is a COLOR PAGE. There will
be two American Flags to color. Color one flag using only a pencil. Color the second flag using red, white, and blue.
Notice
the flag -- Color both the top and bottom stripe red.
Click on the icon to your left. This will download another file. This file I call an EXPLAIN PAGE. It explains how to
listen to two versions of John Philip Sousa's most famous march. I will them have you compare these two versions to the two
American Flags you just colored.
Click on the icon to your left. You will hear one of the most famous pianists of the 20th century -- Vladimir Horowitz.
He took a piece of music that was written for a whole band and arranged it so he could play it on the piano! He was amazing!
Click on the icon to your left. You will hear John Philip Sousa's - Stars and Stripes Forever played as he wrote it; for a concert
band -- complete with trumpets, drums, clarinets, flutes and even piccolo ( a tiny flute). How many musical colors (timbres) can
you find? What a great piece of music!
Click on the icon to your left. It will answer the questions given in the EXPLAIN PAGE.
